Great Clacton was founded by the Celts in c.100 BC. Well suited as a seaside resort modern day Clacton was founded by Peter Bruff in 1871, The Pier and facilities were constructed to make the most of trade from The Woolwich Steam Packet Company which at the time operated between London and Ipswich.
