Diagram Of The H. L. Hunley
Drawing shows a portion of the interior of the H. L. Hunley, a Confederate submersible that became the first submarine to sink an an enemy ship, 1860s. The illustration, probably by William A. Alexander, shows a cutawy view of the side depicting the crew as well as a top view of the craft. When the submarine was raised in 2000 (it had sunk in 1864), it was revealed that the crewconsisted of eight men rather than the nine shown in the illustration. (Hulton Arhive/Getty Images)
