Caerlaverock Castle
circa 1925: Caerlaverock Castle in Nithsdale in Dumfries and Galloway. The castle, which is surrounded by water, was built around 1280 to control the south west entrance to Scotland across the Solway Firth. It was besieged by Edward I in the late 13th century during his campaign against the King of Scotland, John Balliol, but its unique triangular shape made it difficult to penetrate.
