July 1923: Princes Street Gardens in Princes Street, Edinburgh. Waverley railway station is on the left and the Scott Monument is in the centre. Princes Street, named after George IIIs sons, was designed by James Craig (c. 1740 - 95) who built hotels and shops on the north side of the street and left the south side open to slope down to public gardens. Craigs most significant achievement was his winning design for the New Town which was submitted in 1767. (Photo by Alfred Hind Robinson/A H Robinson/Getty Images)
