Framed Print of Forth Ferry
16th April 1955: A ferry named after the early Scottish king, Robert the Bruce, prepares to take cars and passengers across the River Forth in Scotland, in the shadow of the Forth railway bridge at Queensferry. The British government passed the Forth Road Bridge Act and received Royal Assent in 1947 but no work began on any projects for the next eight years. In 1955 the Minister for Transport announced plans for a tunnel under the Forth which would take four years to produce. Local residents and businessmen have long demanded an alternative crossing: the ferry service is inadequate and traffic build-up causes long delays which make it difficult for ambulances to service the industrial areas in Fife. A road bridge was eventually begun in 1958 and opened in 1964.
