Moments of Everyday Brilliance
Where Ordinary Lives Became Extraordinary Photographic Art
Launched in 1938 Picture Post was a groundbreaking British news magazine that revolutionised photojournalism and became a cultural touchstone. Founded by Hungarian émigré Stefan Lorant, a friend of Winston Churchill who had fled Nazi Germany, the magazine quickly became a powerhouse of visual storytelling. Within six months, it achieved a remarkable circulation of 1.7 million copies, reaching approximately 80% of the British population during World War II. The magazine's success stemmed from its innovative approach to visual storytelling, featuring candid images of everyday life captured by talented photographers like Bert Hardy, Felix H. Man, and Bill Brandt who captured the essence of British life from the 1930s to the 1950s. Though its publication ended in 1957, Picture Post remains a crucial historical resource, offering an intimate and authentic view of mid-20th century British society through its groundbreaking photographic documentation.
