Framed Print of Gaelic Girls
23rd July 1955: Mary Catherine, Theresa Maria and Christine Anne MacDonald, the triplets of South Uist in the Hebrides, gather round their mother for comfort. These children have spoken Gaelic for most of their lives and are taught English at school as a foreign language. It is becoming increasingly important for the islanders to learn English as they have become less isolated from the rest of Scotland through an air service which has significantly shortened the journey time to the mainland. This generation is also more likely to leave the Western Isles to seek employment, and fluency in English will be essential.
