The Matterhorn, The Jewel of the Swiss Alps Collection
This gallery contains images of Switzerland's spectacular and majestic, pyramid-shaped mountain standing alone on the horizon
The first ascent of the Matterhorn took place on 14th July 1865 when Edward Whymper and his team completed the first ascent after others had made several unsuccessful attempts. It cost the lives of four out of seven alpinists! Up until then the region had been isolated but after the first ascent the Matterhorn became world-famous. Today it remains a magnet for ambitious mountaineers who aspire to climb it.
