View over the meadows, fields, ponds. The pictures were taken from a hot air balloon. It has been the 13th UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Germany since 1996.
This UNESCO biosphere reserve of 301 sq km covers the largest contiguous pond landscape of Germany. The ponds have been used to breed carp since the 13th century. The local Slavic tribe of the Sorbs has been able to preserve its language and customs for some 1, 500 years.
The biosphere reserve also promotes the local Sorbian culture. Biannual farmersa markets in the biosphere reserve are accompanied by a wide range of Sorbian cultural events
