The concept of piers dates back to ancient civilisations, where simple wooden structures were built as landing platforms for boats and ships. These early piers were used for trade, fishing, and transportation. The real development of seaside piers as we know them today began during the Victorian era in the 19th century. The rise of seaside resorts and the popularity of sea bathing as a leisure activity spurred the construction of elaborate piers along the coasts of Britain and other European countries. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, technological advancements in construction materials, especially iron and steel, allowed for the creation of longer and more elaborate piers. These materials offered increased stability and durability, making piers larger and capable of hosting various entertainment facilities. Seaside piers became synonymous with entertainment and leisure. Amusement arcades, theaters, pavilions, and other attractions were constructed on piers to entertain tourists and visitors. Piers also became popular spots for strolling, socialising, and enjoying the sea views.  Sadly, the mid-20th century saw a decline in the popularity of seaside resorts and piers due to various factors, including the rise of affordable air travel. Many piers fell into disrepair or were demolished. However, in recent decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in preserving and restoring historic piers for their architectural value and cultural significance.
