Subject: The Sutro Tunnel and the Bank of California. Admission FREE. Seats Reserved for Ladies. Come one! Come all!" Adolph Sutro was a Prussian Jewish immigrant who came to Virginia City, Nevada where he floated the idea of building a drainage tunnel in the Comstock Silver Mine. With the initial support of state legislators, Sutro went public and raised the necessary funds to start construction in 1869. Sutro thought he could establish a monopoly of services, charging fees for drainage, milling, transportation of ore and miners. This would have impacted the control exerted over the mine by the Bank of California, which became an opponent of the project. Sutro completed the tunnel in 1878, but sold out his interests and moved to San Francisco. He there engaged in real estate investments, opened the Sutro Baths, served as mayor for two years and built a magnificent mansion.
