Roque Nublo Natural Monument in Grand Canary island
The natural monument Roque Nublo is one of the most important symbols of Grand Canary island (belonging to the Canary Islands and located in the Atlantic Ocean) in Spain.
Located in the central town of Tejeda, it is situated at 1813 meters above sea level.
Roque Nublo is considered one of the largest natural rocks in the world, it measures about 80 meters from the base.
Of special significance to the islanders, this volcanic rook was an ancient place of worship for the aborigines and its surroundings was declared a protected Natural Area in 1987 and in 1994 was declared Rural Park.
Grand Canary is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain, with some 3.3 mln tourists in 2011. Since 2005, a large sector of the island and its adjacent sea border, where its land part covers 46% (69, 000 hectares) of the island territory in the western half was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO
